Size & Installation
Guide

Getting the size and height right is what makes a light look like it belongs. These are the simple rules designers use. Treat them as starting points, not strict limits.

Chandeliers & pendants in a living room or foyer

Width: add the room's length and width in feet. The total, in inches, is a good fixture diameter. A 12 ft × 14 ft room suits a fixture about 26" wide.

Height: leave at least 7 ft (about 2.1 m) between the floor and the bottom of the fixture in walkways. In double-height foyers, the fixture usually hangs at second-floor level.

Over a dining table

Width: choose a fixture about ½ to ⅔ the width of the table, and keep at least 6" between its edges and the table ends.

Height: hang the bottom of the fixture 30–36" above the tabletop. Add about 3" for every extra foot of ceiling above 8 ft.

Over a kitchen island

Hang pendants 30–36" above the counter. Use two pendants for islands up to about 6 ft and three for longer islands, spaced evenly with about 24–30" between them and at least 6" in from each end.

Bedrooms

Bedside pendants or wall lights look best with the light source roughly at shoulder height when you sit up in bed, about 20–30" above the mattress. Table lamps should be about the same height as each other and in proportion to the nightstand.

Wall lights

Mount indoor wall lights around 60–66" from the floor to the center of the fixture, and about 8–10 ft apart along hallways. Beside a mirror, place them at roughly eye level.

Outdoor lights

  • Beside a door: choose a wall light about ¼ to ⅓ the height of the door, mounted slightly above eye level.
  • Path lights: space them 6–8 ft apart, alternating sides for a natural look.
  • Post & pillar lights: scale the light to the pillar. The base should sit comfortably within the pillar top.
  • String lights: measure the run first and allow extra length for gentle drape between anchor points.

Before you install

  • Hardwired fixtures should be installed by a licensed electrician to meet local code.
  • Always switch off power at the breaker before any electrical work.
  • Check that your ceiling box is rated for the fixture's weight, especially for chandeliers.
  • Check the product description for the bulb type, any dimmer compatibility and outdoor suitability.
